- Lack of clear goal. When creating a blog, a blogger should first establish the goal and the purpose of creating the site. Without a clear goal, the blog would be like a lame duck. A goal is always needed to provide directions for a blog. Without such directions, the blogger would not be able to maximise the full potential of his blog. It is very lame to assume that your blog would be for all people, since not all have the same interests, aspirations and surroundings. If you have no clear target audience, the likely result is that you would fail come up with definite posts.
- Failing to post regularly. What typically attracts and keeps readers into a blog are the posts of the blogger. In the first place, the information and the message embedded in the posts are what readers came for. If a blogger does not post on his blog in a regular basis, there is a high chance that the target audience would shy away from the site.
- Failing to consider SEO. Even if a blogger has a clear target audience, the blog would be lame if there is no traffic. If a blogger wants to generate traffic onto his blog, then he should consider employing search engine optimization. This will allow the blog to be more searchable. The right use of keywords and images as well as links would enable a site to be optimised for search engines.
- Writing for the ranking. Many bloggers do not care whether their blogs have contents that connect and pertain to the target audience. All they care is how they could generate traffic into their blogs and raise their search engine rankings. If this becomes the case, then the blog could become something that would turn away readers. Readers might enter the blog but they may not follow it since its contents are something they can’t relate to.
- Ignoring social media links. A blogger should always remember that social media account holders number more than a billion. Failing to recognise the potential of social media sites is a grave mistake.
- Copying contents. A blog that has contents copied from other sites is always at a disadvantage. First of all, search engines like Google recognise originality as one of the factors for rankings. Second, search engines typically know the real owner of the content posted on a blog. This means that copied contents would not lead to higher rankings in search engine searches.
